Review: Flood

After seeing Flood on sale in HMV, I figured my brother would like to see it being the geography type. Flood is the story of a storm hitting Britain and a tidal wave being sent into London. It follows a collection of Themes Barrier, MET Office and Government employees attempting to survive the storm and prevent the annihilation of the capitol.

The film is centered around an ex-couple played by Robert Carlyle(28 Weeks Later) and Jessalyn Gilsig(Claire's real mum in Heroes). I never though much of Carlyle, and this film didn't help that view, with his acting being fairly dull and repetitive. There are a host of other main characters and at the start of the film it was very confusing as to who they all were.

The plot of the film is predictable with no surprises but I guess that is to be expected as all natural disaster movies seem to follow the same pattern. I was hoping for a twist to come along and make it a little more interesting, suffices to say, it never came. Furthermore, it was flawed in many places, and the abrupt ending left a ton of loose ends, including some huge ones such as if the main characters plan to save London worked.

As you would expect, special effects play a huge part in Flood, and in most places they are as believable as can be expected, but there were a few occasions were the effects were blatantly obvious and were poorly done. I think the main attraction for me to this film was the effects, and they played their part in making attempting to make the film believable.

While I enjoyed parts of the film, I would not recommending buying this film unless you can find it in a bargain bin at your local supermarket. For me the special effects make it worth watching if its on TV some time in the future.

When all is said and done, it had the potential to be great, but ended up being a disappointing, mediocre film. If you absolutely love The Day After Tomorrow it could be worth watching if its on, but I wouldn't waste money on buying the DVD(especially as the only extras are interviews).

Charisma

Today, Stephen shared this link with me: http://www.newsweek.com/id/105580

It is about Heath Ledger, and his charismatic way about life. It is a very moving read, Ledger fan or not. I think we, me included, could learn a lot from Heath Ledger.

Quote:

One time he and another actor were shooting a complex scene. We had two days to shoot it, and at the end of the first day, they'd really found something and Heath was worried that he might not have it if we stopped. He wanted to carry on and finish. It's tough to ask the crew to work late when we all know there's plenty of time to finish the next day. But everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared. Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance to create that they'd given him.

This touched me immensely. How often do we ask for something from people, and out of their good will, give up time to help us? And when we do, are we as grateful as we should be? I know that personally, when I ask for something, I am never as appreciative as I could be, and I will try harder at giving people the thanks they deserve. But as a community, are we as thankful of the staff as we could be? They are not employed and give support out of their generosity, something we should honor. I am sure I could never give the level of commitment as most of the staff do.

If that article has taught you anything, hopefully you will be more considerate of others around you that help you, and maybe you will find some way to repay them for their gratitude.

Heath Ledger will be hugely missed, and watching The Dark Night will not be the same knowing he is no longer with us.
