About jQuery

JQuery is a powerful, cross-browser JavaScript library. We have included it in ZetaBoards to make creating and maintaining codes easier, and thus improve the quality of codes available to board owners. Plus, it allows us to achieve neat effects with a minimum of code and browser havoc.

Why you should code with jQuery:

  • It's easier. Whether you are proficient at JavaScript or just starting out, jQuery makes coding less Sisyphean task. JavaScript support varies with each browser, and plain JavaScript codes often require numerous methods of performing the same procedure. JQuery simplifies this, offering you a consistent way to select elements on the page, manipulate their attributes, and achieve special effects. It's not a replacement for JavaScript, however, so you can still make it as complex as you need.
  • It takes up less space. You get a limited amount of space in your board wrappers. Yes, you can use externally hosted JavaScript files, but these will still slow down the loading of your board. Since jQuery shortens your code, it means you can fit more codes into your board wrappers. Plus, a shorter code is easier to maintain, debug, and for new coders, understand.
  • It has nifty plugins. Rather than spending a month trying to achieve the effect you need in several browsers, try searching the jQuery plugin repository for what you need.

How to get help:
First, browse the jQuery documentation. It is an amazing resource that documents jQuery's functions and features. There are links to tutorials, plugins, and other jQuery resources.

For Firefox users, the Firebug add-on is a useful addition to your web development arsenal. Good for more than just JavaScript, Firebug allows you to edit any webpage in real-time, as well as track the changes that JavaScript makes to the source. You can test out your jQuery and tweak it without having to update the page.

Keep in mind that this section is primarily for jQuery help with your board. While you may ask for general jQuery help, you may be better off asking on the jQuery mailing list, where both jQuery developers and veteran users are on hand.

Have fun!
