I've never done that for a board, but I'm not opposed to the idea... I'm just not sure why it's done/what the benefit(s) are. Can anyone help?

thx! :$

When you register a ZetaBoard, you'll be able to access your board through the URL http://s1.zetaboards.com/yourboard. Registering your own domain name allows you to use it instead of the ZetaBoards URL, so you could use http://yourdomain.com instead. You can even use a subdomain forums.yourdomain.com if you wanted.

It's basically a more personal domain for your board. :)

It's really a matter of identity. A domain name is your address on the Web. A domain name is usually easier to remember; even with bookmarks, you'd be surprised how many people lose websites.

If you ever decide to leave ZetaBoards, for whatever reason, then you can simply point your domain name to your new website, and your users will go there instead of going to the board. Even if you don't want to leave ZetaBoards, you may decide to set up a website of which the forum is only a part. Then, as Jonathan said, you can use a subdomain for the forum and the domain will point to the main site. You can ever go further and set up email addresses for your domain, so instead of using yourname@somewebmailservice.com, you can have yourname@yourdomain.com.

When you register a domain name, is it still free? Or does it cost something to get one?

Domain names generally cost, yes. Most domain registrars charge, and it's unlikely you'll ever find free .com domains. There are domain registrars that do offer free domains, however, such as co.cc domains, or subdomains.

Well, mine wouldn't be a .com, we want it to be .org.

.orgs are usually paid only as well. You can get a good idea on prices for particular extensions by checking out GoDaddy. They usually are among the cheapest.

Once you have a domain name, it's free to use it with your ZetaBoard.

If I'm still IF, but awaiting conversion to Zeta, how would the set-up with a domain work? (in the now? or should I get the domain (if I want to go that way), and just hold until until after the conversion?)
