Guests and Permissions
If you want to attract new members you should seriously consider allowing guests to view some forums. It's a common thing among boards to offer insight into what the board is about - why not allow guests to see the basic forums? Announcements, feedback, chat, games, etc. - community forums - are all areas guests should be able to view.

If you want to hide the main content of the forum then you should make full use of the Welcome Box to inform guests that there's more to be seen if they register, and a list of what they'll get access to. Be sure to make it sound exciting! You need them, they don't need you, so why should they choose you? What's unique about your board? What can you offer them? Consider these things.

You could also consider using the new View function in Permission Masks to display forums but prevent the content within from being accessed by unregistered users, allowing them to see as many forums as you wish without giving too much away.
